How to Write a Summary Essay 1) Writes restates main ideas of the entire reading in his/her own words i) Includes main points, so shorter is alright ii) NO ADDITIONAL INFO! Only say what the original work says. Step 1: Close read the material to understand the main points (underline or highlight key points) Step 2: Do not add examples, descriptions, or illustrations for clarification Step 3: Make a list of focused thoughts Step 4: Make sure to introduce author and title of work at the beginning of summary Summary Writing Tips: 1. Read TWICE! 2. Highlight the key points 3. List the key points 4. Articulate key points in essay 5. In the introduction, mention author, title of work, and thesis 6. Use transitional phrases and words for smoother writing Summary Writing Setup: I. Intro (2­3 sent.)  Introduce author’s first and last name. Throughout paper, just use last name.  Include the title of article (use quotations marks)  Introduce thesis (brief overview of article) II. Body (5­7 sent.)  Start with attribution (credit to author by using words like “claims”, “states”, etc.)  Present key points in order as shown in original article III. Conclusion  Wrap up the summary by summarizing last few paragraphs of article  Avoid using your opinion; keep author’s opinion throughout summary
