Psych Notes Influences on the neuron can be: Excitatory o Positive charge increases the activity or the receiving neuron Inhibitory (negative) o These decrease the activity of the receiving neurons An action potential obeys the allornone law: When triggered, the resulting transmission is always the same size and shape (refer to graph in 091316 notes) There are many types of neurotransmitters: Acetylcholine o Influences muscle action, learning, and memory o These neurotransmitters deteriorate in Alzheimer’s Dopamine o Influences movement, learning, attention, and emotion o Deteriorate in Parkinson’s o Schizophrenic individuals have too much serotonin Serotonin o Influences mood, hunger, sleep, and arousal o Individuals with depression have too little serotonin in their body’s Norepinephrine o Assists control of alertness and arousal o Too little causes depression GABA o Major inhibitory neurotransmitter o Too little leads to seizures, tremors, and insomnia Glutamate o Major excitatory neurotransmitter o Too much leads to overstimulation that results in migraines or seizures MSGMonosodium Glutamate Endorphins o Their structure is that of an amino acid and it occurs in response to pain and vigorous exercise and it is a naturally occurring opiate o Endogenous: ghinside the body
