September 15, 2016 Cancer Awareness: Lisa Brown • 3 time cancer survivor • She had melanoma, breast cancer, and leukemia (APL) o Surgery for melanoma o Lumpectomy and radiation (for preventative measures) for breast cancer o 38 days in hospital and outpatient chemo for the APL • She is saved by early detection • When in a doctors office she had a “God moment” when being proactive and asking her physician to do blood work, which is when the Leukemia was found • None of her cancers were related to each other; this is extremely rare • Things that have helped her throughout her journey: o Faith in God o Spiritual health o Positive attitude was key o Able to work though most of the treatment § Kept focusing on other things other than cancer o Unbelievable support system o Amazing healthcare workers § Positive attitude § Empathy § Key to remember that healthcare workers are human § A little love goes a long way o Struggled with managing her pain o Family kept her going o “Chemo-brain” is a real thing § Issues with memory o Setting goals was key o Learning about the cancer that was attacking her body o Staying physically active • Do not let cancer define who the person is • Must more appreciative of everyday life things, now that this has happened to her • You never know what people are going through – keep that in mind.
