Christina Oliva ENGL102 September 12, 2016 Ferguson Uncensored Elements of the rhetorical situation and application to Rolling Stone’s article  Rhetor o Author Tim Dickinson has his own opinions and biases about this topic and events occurring in Ferguson, Missouri. These are very evident by which side he chooses to defend in this article as well as the language he chooses. o Do not know what or why his biases are that way  Genre o New article—a type of article is supposed to bring forth the breaking news that will attract audiences to their source. o Reputable new source so Dickinson has the freedom to use rhetorical language in his article that may not convey the most accurate description of the situation o Often things are intentionally left out of news for the sake of the point or side of the story the rhetor is trying to make which is the case in this situation when the police side of things is completely ignored and not addressed.  Audience o Could potentially be hundreds of thousands of people using the Rolling Stone’s website for news articles. Having the ability to share web articles online Dickinson would know that and would choose to make the article as most persuasive in the favor of his argument as possible to draw in more readers. o Main audience are people who want to defend Michael Brown and his killing, also those who are effected by the police presence in Ferguson, MO and do not like it o Secondary audience are people on the other side of the argument he is trying to paint a negative picture of the police and their reaction to protests so they don’t blindly accept the police as keeping the peace and being good o Tertiary audience are people who completely disagree and would share or read his article to voice an opinion against him but would still be creating traffic for his article online as well as potentially reaching main or secondary audiences.  Purpose o To voice an opinion with images to show the bad things the police are doing in response to protests in Ferguson, MO. He is attempting to rile up the masses that already may be angry on the same side of the debate he is on and using rhetoric to do so will be an even more passionate way for them to show others what they believe. o Clear purpose to show one side of the situation and not the other  Context o Extreme dysregulation in Ferguson, MO and mass protests sparked by the killing of a young black Michael Brown by a white police officer. o Extremely heightened emotions in all situations in Ferguson and about the case because of the masses it effects even outside of the local area. o Many people have formed very specific opinions on this situation and have expressed them outwardly that are influencing news sources to show certain things, not others and specific sides of this situation  Constraints o There are personal constraints of the personal biases of the author o New article is online only so the language used and captions with the images are as strong and powerful, even excessive, as the author can make it to show try to insight people with the same kind of passion for his side of the argument with his article.  Rhetorical Appeal(s) o Pathos—extreme emotional appeal to his audience by using images and writing a rhetorical piece on such a controversial topic that so many are so upset about and have such strong opinions on for both sides of the situation  Death of a young adult  Police officer may go to prison for many years  Evidence of the situation has not gone to trial at this point so much of people’s opinions are only based on emotions and not any in rationality and facts o Ethos—showing people what the police shouldn’t be doing in response to protest with a reasonable basis for doing so. Trying to show how police are not supposed to act and not supposed to protect people and how their safety is at risk by them Police violence and racial conflict vs. Fergusson The differences of most cases to Michael Brown and Fergusson’s situation is the massive violent protests that ensued after the victim’s death. Even in cases after this in the recent past, no other city has had such large violent protests causing so many police to come to the streets and national guard to be sent in. While the police had to be excessive in force and ways to contain the masses, the people were extreme in their protests and their intentional neglect of law enforcement rules and requests. This was the basis for so much rhetorical new work because there were so many ways the story can be portrayed and two major sides to be defending. Other comparable situations did not often have levels of violence this high as well as the innumerable hours and amounts of media coverage as that of Fergusson’s unrest.
