Review It: Parallel Structure / Composition II (Technical Communication  Emphasis)     Parallel Construction o Used when writing a resume, or any type of list o Forms a list of ideas o Creates a pattern for easy understanding by the reader o Refers to the structure of words and sentences put together  Example: “I came, I saw, I conquered” o List of ideas: coming, seeing, conquering o Parallelism: the use of proper verbal construction that corresponds in grammatical  structure  Rule #1: “Picking a part of speech for your list and sticking to it” (Schmoop  2014)  I.E., verbs, nouns, adjectives, etc.  They all have a suffix or helper word o Parallelism Example #1:  Infinitives = “to ___”  I.E., The student started to cry, to struggle for her notes, and to finally finish  her homework.  The student started to cry, struggle for her notes, and finally finish her  homework. o Parallelism Example #2:  Gerund = “ing” ending  I.E., Susanne enjoys riding her bike, running marathons, and playing guitar. o Parallelism Example #3:  Adverb = “ly” ending  I.E., Brad’s girlfriend was very supportive, so she waited very patiently,  devotedly, and lovingly for him to come home.
