Margaret Hovis August 31, 2016 Genesis 12-25 • What did the text say? o The text went into great detail about Abraham, a loyal servant of God. It described the troubles and triumphs of Abraham, his wife Sarah, and his nephew, Lot. It explores the conception and life of Abraham’s son, Ishmael, whom was conceived with the slave of Sarah. It also explores the conception and life of Abraham and Sarah’s son, Isaac. Overall, the text is a summary of Abraham’s life and loyalty towards God. • Who are the major characters? o The major characters in this text are Abraham and his wife Sarah, as well as the many descendants of Abraham. The descendants of Abraham include Ishmael and Isaac. The text also explores the descendants of Lot, such as his two daughters and their children, Moab and Benammi. • What are the themes? o I believe the themes of this text have to do with obedience and loyalty towards God and His will. For example, Abraham was a faithful follower of God and never questioned His plan, therefore, God rewarded him by giving him a son, Isaac. Because Abraham respected his covenant with God, he experienced great triumph. • What did you like about this text? o I liked that in this text, it shows us how Abraham was rewarded for his loyalty and reverence to God. The Bible tells us that we will be rewarded for following God and His kingdom. I think it’s nice that this text is the first time in which we are really given a concrete example of what a follower of God looks like. • What did you not like about this text? o I did not like the story of Moab and Ammon conceiving children with their father. Although I think that text revolves more around the historical world of the bible, I don’t think that is something that we can relate to very much in modern times. It is a disturbing story and I did not like that part of this text. • Why what I read is important: o I think this text is important because Abraham is one of the earliest references we have to a strong bond with God. Abraham is an example of who we as Christians should strive to be, and I think it is very important for all Christians to recognize what God is calling us to be.
