SMAD Chapter 5: Newspapers in the digital age: Transitions- a. Cutting cost- (newspapers share posts now) They are sharing content. Also cut cost by laying off employees. They stop delivery in some areas. Some even dropped the print edition and became online-only publications. b. Increasing revenue- charge readers a small sum for content (micropayment) like iTunes. Advertise on cell phones or other mobile media. Online newspapers-  News hole- the amount of news that can be printed in one edition. Printed newspapers have this problem not online!  Online papers can be updated continuously  They are interactive. (Comment boards, email, feedback)  Provide photos and videos to accompany stories. Mobile Media-  Newspapers that put their content on the Web for free was a move that hurt its bottom line.  Mobile media is like smart phones and e-readers  Using m.m to appeal more to people.  They formed apps for phones that have subscriptions to the daily news.  There is a down side to apps though. It’s expensive to develop, and need two apps one for iPhone and one for Android. User-generated content-  Newspapers allow people to comment on stories but don’t rely heavily on citizen journalist because it’s risky. (don’t know if citizen is knowledgeable, or has personal agenda) Social media-  Using newspapers have a link to fb or twitter.  People are hired just to control the social media sites for newspapers Defining features of newspapers:  Newspaper is made up of diverse content. (international, nation and local news) (editorials, sports, comics, movie listings)  Newspapers are conveniently packaged. Both print and online are organizing according to content. Headlines are important for readers  Newspapers are local. (talk about school board, city council, local police stations)  Newspaper serves as a historical record. Basically a newspaper can be kept forever and looked at in the future to reference the past which is happening now.  Newspapers perform the watchdog role. (alert public of threats)  Newspapers are timely. (usually breaking news not old news) Organization of the newspaper industry: Print dailies-  Daily newspaper has to appear 5 times a week to be considered dailies  Circulations- number of copies delivered to subscribers, newsstands and vending machines  Drop in number of newspapers sold per household.  National newspapers- not geared to one particular region or city but for country. (ny times & wall street journal)  Large metropolitan dailies- newspapers based in communities with 500,000 or more and in the biggest trouble. Their circulation is hurt because of loss of advertising, internet and young readers reading on the web.  Medium sized dailies- Circulation range between 100,000 & 500,000 and the papers at the top of this range are declining as fast as their big-city counter parts.  Small-town Dailies- circulation of 100,000 or less and the best because they face less competition from media outlets.  Print weeklies- number of these increased in circulation but weekly publishers are cost-conscious due to rising costs of printing and distribution.  Special service and minority newspapers- African Americans have had specific newspapers for a while. Hispanics fast growing minority and press is growing with them. College press is another big special service newspaper. Organization of online newspapers:  News aggregators- info from other sources and meld it into a new presentation. Two types: a. Sites that use an automatic formula to scan news publications and group related stories together like google and yahoo news b. Sites that use human to scan and select the stories such as Huffington post Positive side: ppl will click link to look at full post Negative side: ppl scan the aggregator’s summaries and never visit the original source.  Online web or new papers are associated with a local or national print newspaper. One person work on both the print and online.  Online only sites- many started by laid off journalist from their print jobs or whoever was left of the print publication that went out of business. Newspaper ownership:  Big companies got bigger by gobbling up smaller fish. Producing the print and online newspaper: Departments and staff-  Papers are divided into 3 parts: a. Business (selling advertising space in print and online editions and building paper’s circulation and website traffic b. Production (handles the physical and electronic tasks necessary to get the news printed on paper and available on the web. c. News-editorial- news & editorial are kept separate on print and online versions. They contain opinions while news pages obtain objective reporting.  Arrangements for combined newsrooms: a. A news flow editor who manages the progress of a story through both the print and online version b. A story builder who combines print, audio and video elements for a story c. A news resources who specializes in information providing background, depth and context to stories in both the print and online versions d. Backpack journalists who conduct interviews, take photographs and record audio and video footage for dissemination in print and online formats. Republication routine-  Print- has deadline  Online- no deadline 24/7 updates  Print have to send a bunch of stuff to diff people to edit, design and print papers  Online just doe sit themselves through one or two people and then changes continuously The economics of newspaper publishing:  Decline in advertising revenue Revenue-  Two sources of revenue for print paper: a. Selling advertising space b. Circulation income ($ from subscriptions and newsstand sale)  4 main types of advertising revenue: a. Local retail- advertising by local specialty stores, grocery stores and other local businesses b. Classified- employment ads, for sale ads, usually published in a special section of the paper c. National: ads brought by advertisers who need to reach a mass audience such as ads for food, cell phones and financial services d. Prepaid inserts: e. Supplements put together usually by national chains like best buy and target that are inserted into the paper  Classified and local retail are most important Expenses-  Classify the cost by function a.
