CHEM 001W Dr. Eichler 9/26/2016 CH 1 Introduction to Matter & Measurements A. Properties of Matter: ● Substances: Elements (“purest” form) vs. Compounds (multiple elements combined) Pure substances Fe2O3(s) = compound Fe(s) = element ● Mixtures of Substances: Heterogeneous (the substances do not mix) vs. Homogeneous (uniform mixture; looks like one new substance) Heterogeneous mixture: oil and water, sand and water Homogeneous mixture: NaCl(aq) ● Chemical & Physical Changes of Substances: Physical Properties (a change occurs, but still same substance) vs. Chemical Properties (involves changing the identity; new substance) Ex: molecular oxygen (O2) O2 will react with metals to form metal oxides (chemical property) ; O2 is a gas with a very low boiling point (physical property)
