TED TALK: “How Movies teach Manhood” Colin Stokes November 2012. Wizard of Oz: 40 years later, this trend started Movie contains very little violence compared to other movies today. All significant characters are female: Dorothy, Glenda, Wicked Witch. Those show leadership and makes friends with all Star Wars: Boys take away from this movie that either it shows courage, loyalty and perseverance OR that Luke joins an army to overthrow the government. Movie contains only male characters except the aunt and princess, who waits around only to give a crown What they have in common: OB1 and Glenda both show leadership, and share knowledge with others Movies in the past and today have FORCE Disney movies sent message to boys that they are not the target audience, but that they are showing girls how they defend against the patriarchy but not boys. There are no models for them. Pixar: journey of boys, men, boys and men, or 2 men raising a little girl. Brave was the first movie that portrayed a girl as the main character Bechdel Test: 1. Are there at least 2 women in the movie that actually has lines 2. Do they talk to each other at all throughout the movie? 3. Do they have a conversation about something other than a man? Argo: Flunks Bechdel Test 2011 – 11% female protagonists 1 in 5 women sexually assaulted Is girl power going to protect girls? It shows new definition of manhood – men becoming caregivers, finding a new way to communicate, show them that a real man is someone who trusts and respects their sisters. The goal is that boys identify with other girls and be on their team not against them.
