MTH 111 (Study Skills #1) Myths: – Im just not a “math person” – If i don’t know how to do something, i never will – If you don’t know a problem, try something out – Math is all about memorizing a bunch of formulas and rules – I’ll never use this Math is Sequential – Math builds on what you’ve previously learned – Math placement test scores play an important role in your learning – If you tested in the lower percentile it is suggested you retake the previous math class Math is not a spectator sport – Just like athletes and musicians do, you have to practice math in order to be successful come “game time” – Do math at least every other day – homework – reviewing notes – exam reviews – Reading the book – create an environment that is similar to the one you’ll have to take a test in – learn how to speak math as a language – make math part of your regular schedule just like a job College math classes:what to expect – fast paced – responsibility is on you – expect to spend 2-3 hours outside of class, for every hour you’re in class – in many classes attendance is optional – you must have a c in order to move onto next class – do not expect your math teacher to let you do extra credit or retake exams to get a higher grade – the last thing you want to do in math is fall behind General tips – Keep a positive attitude – Ace that first exam – Go to class on time and prepared – Ask questions when you have them and get help right away – YOU can do this
