N o t e s   f o r   P s y c h o p a t h o l o g y   P S Y   3 6 3   S e p t e m b e r   8 ,  | 10 1 6 Chapter 2 Things for exam to know: causal factors, Experimental method and correlation method,  pathways to development: 5 Pathways, equifinality and multifinality   Risk, vulnerability, resilience Development   Psychological changes can develop along with your biological changes  Quantitative changes: have there been an increase or decrease in interactions with people  Qualitative changes: what are the quality of the interactions; ex: parents divorced, one  only texts the kid and the other acts like a parent   Stage theorists: course of early development; standard stages that kids go through  throughout their development  Changes that occur throughout their development process is not always positive Causal factors  BDI (Beck’s Depression Inventory) Aaron Beck cognitive theorist, he created an  assessment tool to determine the severity of the depression   Mediating and Moderating factors: correlation studies  Correlation does not equal causation, it just looks at relationships between factors  Correlational research: positive= when one increases, the other increases//when one  decreases, the other decreases   Negative correlation: when one increases, the other one decreases  Ex: maternal alcohol consumption increases, the fetus develops fetal alcohol syndrome  POSITIVE CORRELATION   Ex: students start to skip class more frequently, their grades decrease NEGATIVE  CORRELATION Causal Factors  Polytheistic approach: number symptoms associated with the diagnosis, you must get  minimum number of symptoms in order to get the diagnosis  N o t e s   f o r   P s y c h o p a t h o l o g y   P S Y   3 6 3   S e p t e m b e r   8 ,   2 0 1 6 | 2  Length of time for the diagnosis to be administered, length of time symptoms have been  apparent Pathways to Development
