9/28 Key IMF Activities­  Surveillance:  ­ Research, stats, forecasts, and analysis based on tracking, of global, regional,  and individual economics and markets/ Trying to prevent problems and not allow them to happen. Example of failure: Housing market crash  ­ Policy advice to governments and central banks based on analysis of economic  trends and cross­ country experiences/ Advisors  Financial Assistance:  ­ Loans to help countries overcome economic difficulties; Typically low income  countries(Portugal, Mexico, Greece, Ireland, Colombia etc..) ­ Concessional loans to help fight poverty in developing countries.  ­ Technical assistance and training to help countries improve the management of  their economics. (typically by extremely educated economists or advisors) Facts On IMF:  ­ Membership: 187 Countries  ­ Headquarters: Washington D.C.  ­ Executive Board: Consists of 24 directors that rep a single country or a group.  ­ Staff #­ Approximately 24,000 members from 146 countries  ­ Total Quota: usd $327 Billion  ­ Additional committed resource: usd $885 billion  ­ Biggest borrowers: Portugal, Greece, Ireland, Ukraine  ­ Biggest precautionary loans: Mexico, Poland, Colombia, Morocco Definition of Quota:  ­ Quota is what determines the countries contribution to IMF assets, and the  percentage vote they account for as a member of IMF. (Example: The USA as a top  contributor of IMF has a percentage vote of 16.53% because of their assets.)  List of top 10 IMF Quota:  USA: 16.54% Japan: 6.16% China:6.09% Germany: 5.33% France: 4.04% United Kingdom: 4.04% India: 2.64% Russia: 2.60% Brazil: 2.23% Canada: 2.22% Goals By 2030:  ­ End extreme poverty by decreasing the percentage of people’s living on less  than $1.25 a day to no more than 3%  ­ Promote shared prosperity by fostering the income growth of the bottom 40% for  every country (Not positive but important)
