ENC3021 Class notes 9/28/16  Quintilian o Guidelines: how students should act, how rhetoricians should act, how teachers should act o Quintilian’s principles  Education begins at birth  Builds good habits  From the time someone is born and begins to learn language, they need people around them with good habits of speech and who are knowledgeable  Wide array of knowledge  Rhetoric is born from a wide base of knowledge  One needs a wide base of knowledge to start the study of rhetoric  Speaking, reading, and writing begins with every subject o History, literature, music, gymnastics  Can rise to aristocracy with knowledge; with knowledge you can be a rhetorician  Focus on student-teacher relationships  Positive relationship  Enjoy each other’s company, mutual respect  Without coddling and over-praising  Elite and selective  Encourage modesty  Language education  Increases faculty  If you could read Greek and Latin, you could read original texts, bringing you closer to actual theorist’s words o Nothing gets lost in translation o Theorists meant to serve as educational and moral models  If you learn theories or great men, you can become like them  Punishment=forced contemplation  Keeping the positive/paternal relationship between student and teacher  Discussion based education  There’s a pattern for learning o Teachers share knowledge, students put their own spin on it o Modeling type behaviors transform and students start building on the modeling  Writing, reading, performance integrated with all studies  Basis of everything  Delivery is very important  Goal-centered learning  Good character of teachers  Student looks up to them and models themselves after  Produce good speakers o Good quality and good morally  People who are virtuous and will help others to virtue o If teacher is not of good character, whole system falls apart  Good man speaking well  Ethics  In reaction to Sophists, idea of goodness/morals/ethics gets attached to rhetoric  If it’s used in defense of the bad, it is not really rhetoric  Must look at all sides of case- the good and the bad o Helps you come up with a better rhetorical strategy o Must know all sides of the argument o More practical than Plato- want to look for the truth, but in order to accomplish something good, you must be successful in your rhetoric
