Chapter 1: Why Public Speaking is Important McGraw Hill Education Fundamentals of Oral Communication Professor Ironside  People succeed when their oral communication skills are practiced and mastered. They succeed in their profession.  Speech is also a way of civic engagement which means individually and collectively doing actions that identify and address issues that concern the public.  Leaders in today’s society are masters of public speaking because it is a form of empowerment. It’s a big reason on why they have risen to a level of power.  People learn to develop critical thinking skills including:  Learning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of an argument  Distinguishing fact from opinion  Judging the credibility of sources  Assessing the quality of the evidence shown  Discerning relationships among ideas  Similarities and Differences of Public Speaking and Conversations  Similarities include they both organize thoughts, adjust their message toward their specific audience, should have a maximum impact, and adapt to the feedback  Differences include public speaking to be highly structured compared to conversation, the use of formal language, and using different methods of delivery  A big thing about public speaking that affects many people is ANXIETY!  Ways to manage anxiety include: taking a class, being prepared, being positive, visualizing your speech, relaxing, having a friendly face, being realistic, taking advantage of opportunities, and getting professional help.  Finally, there are 8 elements of the speech communication process:  The Speaker – Either it is yourself or someone else  The Message – What the speaker is trying to communicate  The Channel – How you communicate the message  The Listener(s) – Those receiving the message  The Interference – Either thoughts or distractions leading you to not listen to the speaker  The Situation - Where (time and place) that the communication happens  The Feedback – Letting you know how a message (whether yours or someone else’s) is being received  The Influence – Can wither be emotional, physical, or cognitive
