English M103 Tuesday, September 27, 2016 Week 1 Kuppers “Studying Disability Arts and Culture” - studying liability means dealing with ambivalence and uncertainty - disability is a machine rather than an entity, something to be processed through not anything concrete. It is an unstable form of identity which when presented filters life in a way that makes us rethink how identity works. - any definition of disability is already a political statement - People attempt to define the term disability to try to accommodate it or to fix it, any form of trying to define it serves a political purpose more than any other purpose. - different groups employ different languages around disability - how we label disabilities according to our own language; “disabled person”/“person with a disability”; “they” vs. “us”; personal, medical, and self-identifying labels, how do they differ? what is more “correct” or more respectful? - disclosure and “coming out” as disabled are complex processes, as disability has historically been denigrated and has negative associations. - what are the costs and opportunities; what disabilities are ostracized?; - artists can and do play with words and their associations, and can bring out undertones, new insights, opportunities for engagement. - artists render art forms that can be unrestpectful or respectful of people with disabilities. - disability is a discursive construct - coming out implies overcoming stigmas. How does it relate to present events, concepts, culture?
