NUTR 221 Class Notes Oct. 3 , 2016 Information on next paper, due October 12 :th  Follow all instructions  This paper is about the effects of food and lifestyle choices on personal health o Talk to a family member with a chronic disease (pick a disease that has risk factors)  Determine the risk factors for the disease  Determine how to prevent the disease  Apply this concepts to your own self- how can my choices now effect the likelihood of developing this disease?  This paper is very straightforward  2-3 pages, no more than 3  Cite  The instructions and rubric are on Blackboard Supertracker  Supertracker is intended for diet analysis o Remember, food records are subjective  1 banana equals two servings, but how do we know if we have a large or small banana?  For our third paper, we are to record three typical days o Include one weekend day o Write down what you ate quickly, before you forget the details o Be detailed o Practice looking at serving sizes  Helpful hints o A salad dressing cup from a restaurant equals 4 tbsp, which is 2oz o A handful of nuts equals 1oz o A carton of school milk is one cup  You will have more accurate results by typing in individual ingredients rather than “sandwich”  This assignment will be due November14 th  Include goals for improvement and refer back to family history GERD- Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease  The sphincter in the stomach allows acid to flow upwards into the esophagus  Symptoms include: o Acid reflux o Regular heartburn o Coughing o Abdominal pain o Nausea o Bad breath  Diagnosis: o Most can be diagnosed by the symptoms alone o Others go for an upper GI or an endoscopy  Risk: o Esophagus inflammation can lead to esophageal cancer o Pneumonia o Congestion o Wheezing  Prevent by: o Not smoking o Not drinking o Consuming smaller, more frequent meals o Cut back on spicy foods and mint gum  Foods that trigger this reaction: o Chocolates o Spicy foods- peppers o Caffeine o Fatty foods  Foods that can help: o Lean meats and beans o Whole grains o Low fats o Baked, not fried foods  These foods are very individual- some might respond differently to certain foods
