Week 8 Readings in Literature and Culture II Dr. Holly Jones Passage to India Chapters 33-37 - Chapter 33 o Two years later; scene opens with Godbole praying/ singing o Shri Krishna was born o Godbole remembers Mrs. Moore and compares himself to a wasp - Chapter 34 o Godbole tells Aziz that Fielding has returned  Fielding had, as Aziz expected, married Adela in England o In the meantime Aziz had moved to a nicer climate, remarried, and lived with his children year-round o Aziz hopes to avoid Fielding and his wife at all costs - Chapter 35 o Aziz takes his children to see The Shrine of the Head- a religious building o The Raja died overnight, but his death was hidden because it was a holiday and no one wanted to ruin the festivities o Aziz meets Fielding and politely greets him o Fielding informs Aziz that he did not marry Adela, but instead married Mrs. Moore’s daughter, Stella - Chapter 36 o Godbole tells Aziz that he knew who Fielding had married for over a year o Aziz read some letters addressed to Fielding; one was from Ronny, another from Adela, who apparently sent money with Stella and Ronny’s brother, Ralph, to be used to “repay India” o Ralph comes to Aziz to get his beestings checked. He seems to be rather afraid of Aziz, saying his hands were unkind, and that he was being cruel o Ralph said his mother had told him all about Aziz in her letters o Aziz insisted on taking Ralph on the boat, where they discovered that the Raja was dead o Aziz’s boat and Fielding’s boat collided, and everyone fell into the water - Chapter 37 o Aziz and Fielding take a final walk through the jungle o Fielding asked about the Hindu festivals, to which Aziz responded that they confuse him o Aziz proclaimed that he wanted India to be its own country, free of all other nationalities and cultures aside from its own
