LECTURE 3: Life of Buddha (9/20)  In Joyus Heaven (the 6 ), there was a god there who was destined to be the Buddha in his next lifetime   Caste System (in India):  o Priest o Warrior o Merchant o Servant   The deity chooses to be born in the Warrior Caste as King Maya and Queen Illusion as  his parents  She dreams of a garden with the gods with a White elephant and a white lotus, here the  Buddha enters her womb through her right side  All 10 lunar months were great, she visits her parents in a nearby kingdom and stops in  Lumbini Garden to five birth (he comes out of her right side, the gods catch him, and the  rain bathes him)   He takes 7 steps to the north at birth, lotus blossoms under his feet at each step,   He says, “I am the best thing on two legs. This is my last lifetime”   His name was Siddhartha  The king calls astrologists who all held two fingers to predict his future that he would be  a 1. great king or a 2. great saint  The king was horrified that he would become a saint so he built his son a castle in  isolation   There was no one ugly here and everything was the best  He was not allowed to leave  He was happy here for 29 years until he asks to leave, his dad says no, after asking a  million times the dad says yes  An army sweeps through to put away anyone ugly/old/etc.  o They miss one person who is old, Sid says “is that the old man? Or are there  more?”  o Charioteer says everyone gets old  o Prince goes home  o Same happens with sick person, with dead person, with meditating monk under  tree o 3 facts of life: aging, sickness, death  Rahula: Buddha’s son  Siddhartha wants to go meditate but his father says he is too young  He says he will only stay if his father stops 3 facts from happening  He says he can’t do that so Bud. leaves  His father gets beautiful women to dance for him but they’re all ugly after they fall asleep  Buddha goes out while they are sleeping  The sky rains down flowers & Buddha looks back by the world pivoting  Buddha changes his clothes and cuts off his hair with a sword and throws it in air “If my  hair does not come down I will achieve enlightenment”  st  A meditation teacher teaches Sid., he achieves highest form on 1  try,  o Teacher offers partnership but B declines  There is a “group of five”­ serious aesthetics (no food etc. for 6 years)  Buddha finally decided this extreme aestheticism was not working when he faints while  bathing  He slept under a tree known to have a spirit, eats the food that someone offers to this  spirit  He is approached by Mara (god of death and desire) o Mara throws arrows at him which turn into flowers o Mara brings in his demons  o Nothing brings Buddha down o Mara finally gives up when Buddha touches ground with right hand and causes  earthquake   Buddha meditiates  o Visions of past life (hour 6pm­ 10pm) o Insight of Karma (10 pm­2am) o Becomes enlightened (2 am­6am)  Buddha becomes enlightened/(awakened from sleep of ignorance­we are all sleeping) on  dawn of 35  birthday
