Monday, October 3, 2016 Intro to World Geography Week 8 Notes RUSSIA: - Physical Russian Geography • Russian Plain - West of the Ural Mountains; Moscow (core of Russia) - Ural Mountains (2000 long) • Low relief mountain chain separating East/West Russia - Western Siberia (constant elevation) • Flat plains and forests - Central Siberia • Moderate mountains; very cold (Arctic Circle) - Eastern Highlands (Mostly the Yakutsk Basin) • One of the most remote places on earth • Continentality has a huge impact on Russia’s climate - Similar to the upper midwest and Canada - Economy is rising • It depends heavily on oil • Becoming increasingly more “modern” and “western” - Russia encompasses 9 time zones • Wake up in Siberia… go to bed in Moscow - Largest country by area in the world • Canada is #2 in territory • Bigger than Pluto - Approximately 9 million more WOMEN then MEN 1 Monday, October 3, 2016 - Lots of coastline… frozen coastline • Available coastline is controlled by other countries - The Soviet Union • U.S.S.R - Union of Soviet Socialistic Republics • Officially formed in 1922 after the Bolshevik Revolution of 1917 Most citizens were very poor, unhappy with autocratic Tsar system • • Industrial Revolution was occurring in Europe which caused a major desire to participate • Monarchy in Russia was overthrown - Tsar Nicholas II and his family were executed - Order was given to Lenin himself - POST SOVIET UNION • The RussianFederation (1991-present) - Becoming more “European” culturally and politically (ie. Western Society) • Only 3 men have been president in the past 22 years - Yeltsin - Putin - Medvedev - Putin (again) 2
