written by Hurston begins by saying its a black family in a black neighborhood - to set up dialect and the scene in which the story will take place; wants to let the reader know that this type of family exists all other black writers are writing about black things but not black families that are happily married - creates world where black is at the center Joe - husband, sweet to Missy May Missy May possibly takes advantage of Joe meaning she takes his kindness and what he gives her and she moves along in the world taking advantage of this kindness he has when she cheats on Joe with Slemmins has she realizes that Joe has what he wants and she wants to get it for him - saying she only did this for the money, the money for Joe not for herself when Joe first started talking about Slemmins she looked at him very dismissive and then sees that what he has would look great on Joe - showing that she wanted to get what he had for Joe she sees Slemmins money as something that would make Joe happy - but this does not negate the fact that she broke the bonds of their marriage - and they were in a happy marriage the coins cause problems because they start being playful between them but then it becomes a problem because thats why she sleeps with Slemmins we know that gilded coins are just painted in gold not real gold - the gold wears away and are not real which they discover later in the story Joe wants to show off Missy May to Slemmins because he brags about all these girls he has Joe finds out it is fake and taunts Missy May with it then she realizes its fake - women were not supposed to be the ones who cheat so it hurts him the situation shows them that marriage is not perfect but they can work through it - the baby helps especially when Joe's mother comes and tells Joe that it looks just like him, even if you cannot tell who the baby looks like the mother plays a role in keeping her son happy mothers recognize tension but the baby helps that situation as well - once the mom was excited about the baby then he was too
