Interview Techniques Tuesday, September 20, 2016 12:57 PM Week 5 Common Mistakes • Being too pushy • Writing a story without a source/witness = no credibility • Using social media as a source (Chris Colfer incident) • Asking yes or no/simple answer questions • Burning bridges = no follow-up interviews • Not having a backup/not being able to adapt Preparation • Bring paper/pen and cell phone/recorder; don’t depend on your memory • What are you hoping to get out of the interview • Questions that will maximize response • Be prepared to throw out your questions/rewrite them on the spot • Be comfortable out of your comfort zone • Be ready to talk to people at their worst • Your deadline doesn't care if you're not prepared Interviewing in Paths • Each interview question is another possibility • One question may take you in completely different direction • AVOID yes or no questions • What do you want your questions to lead up to?
