Leslie Ogu COMM 1041 10/04/2016 - Movie Scene Presentations Day 2 The Big Lebowski ➢ Stereotyping a person will play a significant role in how we perceive them. Most times, as in the scene, it causes a negative outlook and individuals will judge us as a result (usually related to the Horns effect) Room ➢ You never truly know a person’s past just by looking at them. Their unknown or hidden self can greatly influence why they communicate in a certain way, and if we are unaware of the reasoning, it can lead to breaks in communication Captain Philips ➢ Different cultures and individuals have different ways of communicating. So that is why in order to effectively communicate, we have to pay attention to cues and understand their culture before we make perceptions The Help ➢ If we continue to believe what others have to say of us, we may end up compromising who we are as a person. That will in turn affect our communication and how we receive it, because we no longer are true to ourselves but rather someone who wants to please others Love and Basketball ➢ One of the biggest influences in communication is the relationship one shares with another. In this movie, since the main characters are in love, this causes them to have effective communication at times, but also bad because of how strongly they feel for each other. Communication is very important for a relationship and you must be able to effectively communicate how you feel The Godfather ➢ Intimidation may have your voice heard, but it is not effective communication with another person. In order for one to fully listen and understand someone, you have to see eye-to-eye to some degree Philadelphia ➢ If we have preconceived notions about a person, it will greatly affect influence how we treat people in their group. This is not a good image that we paint for ourselves when doing this and should be avoided. We wouldn’t want the same done to us.
