Exercise leadership test 2 notes P.E.D.s  The FDA determines the distinction between something being considered a drug vs.  being considered a dietary supplement. This is based off of the FDA approval for safety  and effectiveness.   Dietary Supplement = product intended to supplement diet; containing one or more of the following ingredients: a vitamin, a mineral, an herb or other botanical, an amino acid  Other qualifications of dietary supplements: ­dietary supplement used to increase total dietary intake ­a concentrate, a constituent, a metabolite, an extract, or a mixture of these ­must be intended for ingestion, and not intended for use as only food in a meal/diet  Anabolic steroids = man made derivatives of testosterone   Dosing­ Stacking is when athletes use several anabolic steroids at the same time (the effect of one drug might be enhanced when combined with another)  Steroids increase muscle protein synthesis which causes an increase in lean body mass  Athletes generally choose to use steroids with hopes of gaining increased muscle mass,  strength, and athletic performance. However, changes depend on how the athlete trains as well.
