Your brain might assume it is an apple if you’re not careful. You brain will fill in the gaps. • We can take in different sensations • Different types of input for each sense • Different pathways to brain for each sense • How much of a stimulus does there need to be before our brain decides there is something there? • Ironclad-the evidence is not clear • People can sense things without being aware of it • Our purchasing behavior is very cognitive. • Subliminal messaging is actually NOT affective 2 PY 101-UNIT2 PY THE 5 SENSES Vision • We rely on vison and hearing the most • Very few of us would give up these two senses • Our eyes have specialized receptors • Enter cornea, adjusted through pupil/iris, goes through lens and then hits retina • 3 different kinds of cones in most people ’s eyes • Our senses are an illusion • Different ways our brain interprets things • Genetic mutation • Males are not Tetra chromatic • Right hemisphere controls left side of body and Left hemisphere controls right side. Things from the left side are transmitted to the right side. • Temporal-trying to interpret faces • Some things will be transmitted to this • Racial bias- to identify people of a different race • We use two eyes, but they make one picture • Context clues Hearing • We interpret sou nd waves • They are basically sound waves • Air moves in certain patterns; you are able to interpret it! • Sound waves vibrate outer ears and go to ear drum • Each hair cell in your ear is a living cell, but it is not actually hair. 3 PY 101-UNIT2 PY • Different ways your ears transduce those signals • Your ears can translate the quality of sound and pitch • Temporal-how they vibrate place-which can vibrate and which do not • What you expect to hear is what you ’ll actually hear • Ex. hearing your name in a crowd. • Our auditory perception is influenced by our vision. • Auditory system-vestibular sense (tactical sense) • Liquid inside ruptures in ear • Bottom membrane • Touching side-falling or asleep. • Top-Inverted (Some people get motion sick) Taste and Smell • Both used chemical molecules as means of input • Quality of chemical. Taste -usually cultural and Smell-is personal. • Chemicals are transduced and then sent to the brain Touch • Receptors in skin are adapted to more than pressure • Specialized receptors for pressure , movement of hairs, temperatures, and different types of pressure • Receptors are also in internal organs (little less accurate) • Brain tells us one thing such as pain in thighs but it is really your kidneys. • Where our body is in space • We cannot tickle • Pain CAN BE controlled ! 4
