Psychology 2: Best Study Techniques for College Students    Questions to be answered: Which techniques actually help students?   Which techniques actually cause students to waste time?    Key point: Education is meant to teach students info that would last them years instead of a  few days. It is easy for students to think personal techniques work, when in fact, these  techniques do not aid in educating them or in helping them remember longterm.    Based on the research of cognitive and educational psychologists, the following study  techniques have been proved to work in multiple testing/working situations (alone or in a group),  aid students from different knowledge backgrounds, help students at learning different ages,  benefit testing performance, and improve longterm understanding of the subject:    1. SELFTEST  a. Flashcards  b. Selfmade tests  c. Sample questions  d. Endofthechapter summary questions   e. According to J. Dunlosky, K. A. Rawson, E. J. Marsh, M. J. Nathan, and D. T.  Willingham, who produced the article W hat Works and What Doesn’t Work, “One  theory is that practice testing triggers a mental search of longterm memory that  activates related information, forming multiple memory pathways that make the  information easier to access.”  f. Fun technique: During notetaking in class, use a binder paper and fold it in half  so you may write key terms and ideas on one side and then test yourself by  writing out what you understood on the other side     2. Organize a long range of time for studying  a. Study each chapter from a lesson one day at a time  b. Commit to studying a comfortable amount of terms daily/weekly      These notes were studied from the article What Works and What Doesn’t Work by  J. Dunlosky, K. A. Rawson, E. J. Marsh, M. J. Nathan, and D. T. Willingham
