Chapter 6: Memory: ↳✴Persistence of learning - Allows us to put information away for later (accounts for time and defines our life) Prospective memory: - Not all about past- we also need to remember things for the future (content and timing) (ex: sister’s birthday, meeting) Without memory? - Everything is on the present, there is no past or future. Without memory we tend to lose our sense of personal identity. Phases of memory: Encode → Put in Store → Hold Retrieve → Get out Information processing model: - Assumes that memory processing is similar to a computer - (Atkinson and Shiffrin) Levels of Processing model: - The more deeply one processes information(According to meaning) will be remembered more efficiently and longer. Other models exist.. Which is right? All have great contributions, they can complement each other Types of memory: Very brief trace Sensory Memory - Echoic-Auditory-A few seconds - Iconic- Visual- Around ¼ second Photographic Memory - Eidetic Other supermemories? Guy who remembers digits in Pi - Women who remembers everyday of her life. Highly superior autobiographical Info available for use- current access Short term Memory - Vs Working memory (Process of Manipulation) - Content - Selective attention can get info here focus on it - The average adult can remember 7 items (+/- two items) most it’s 5-9 items Chunking- - Combine bits into meaningful units allows more in STM How long is STM? - About 15-30 seconds without rehearsal Rehearsal - Conscious repetition of info keeps it in STM (or moves to LTM) STM susceptible to interference
