Chapter 8: News Concept of News  While many people do not have the same definition of news, the most agreeable one is news: report on change  The more newsworthy a story is, the more likely it is to make it into news packages Bennett News Model  James Gordon Bennett: penny press publisher, New York Herald founder  News beats: when a reporter covers a specific subject  Bennett Model of News o Compelling Events: people were searching for big stories to report on o Deadline-Driven: kept news accurate and relevant  Lightning news: news which is delivered by telegraph o Objectivity ensured the story focused on the facts o Veiling the Reporter: first person was not used and bylines, identifying the reporter, was not practiced o Sources: investigative reporting was not used  Joseph McCarthy used news to fuel anti-communism in a way which caused the public to panic  Edward Murrow confronted McCarthy Hutchins News Model  Robert Hutchins was a philosopher who believed news should be meaningful and encourage social responsibility  Mixed Reception o Curtis McDougal coined interpretive reporting and encouraged reporters to make sense of the news they were reporting o Many people disagreed with editorializing the facts presented in the news  Television changed the news in that it allowed comments to come through more easily  The Internet provides users with quick news  These forms of news have increased media literacy in the world Rethinking News Models  Transforming News Environments o Newspaper Dailies: competed for readers to rely on them for news o One-Paper Towns: these papers provided more specialized news for towns o Audience Fragmentation: has diminished in newspapers as TV and Internet have become the main mediums for news  Hybrid News Models o The Times has developed new ways of telling news after the Hutchins and Bennett models Personal Values in News  The role of the journalist has changed from one who reports just the facts to one who is sometimes able to share their opinion on the changes which are occurring  Objectivity o Penny Press relied on facts to convey the story o Associated Press did not allow any opinions in the work o Newspaper Economics: people started writing more objectively to make money  News Hole: space left for news after ads  News Flow: what stories are and aren’t important in a day  Staffing affects what can and cannot be covered in the news  Consensible Nature of News: when a business decides on coverage, then second guesses themselves about the competition they face Quality of News  News as Nonfiction: while most news is accurate, it sometimes contains mistakes  Gatekeeping as Creative: sometimes gatekeeping acts as a way to make a story more interesting  Aggregation Sites: news which is presented in one place from different sources o Huffington Post  Custom News Portals o News Alerts: people can receive emails based on what news they search for Journalism Trends  Newsrooms in Transition o Newsrooms have become more similar with each other since they are trying to be more concise and cost-effective  Nonstop Coverage o People always have access to news via TV or Internet  Live News o Less gatekeeping in live news, and people can see how reporters interact with the people they interview  Exploratory Reporting o Investigative reporting and muckraking has exposed many scandals and sometimes benefitted the public  Soft News o Reporting based on what the audience wants rather than what they need Notes by Danielle Rios
