Black Lit 2 – Toni Cade Bambara “Gorilla, My Love” Good at using young narrators & being sympathetic to their views – problem with adults (seem 1 way, actually another) Go to movie b/c of title – lure, advertisement, not what it seems Learns that adults & their institutions can’t be trusted Pg.842 o Change up – baseball – think you’ll get 1 pitch but get another o Naïve & inexperienced but realizing adults can’t be trusted o Narrator – Hazel – knows adults play games with words o Hunca Bubba Jefferson Winston Vale o Scout – echo of To Kill a Mockingbird Suggests someone who knows how to get there Father knows best & can speak for Black man, white patriarchal society/mindless faith Pg.843 o She likes images – but to come reliably from the title o Baby Jason = less skeptical than she is o How genuine & appealing the narrator is – makes you sympathetic o “Grownups figure they can treat you just anyhow” pg.844 o go along with adult authority b/c the matron has a flashlight meant to shed light but she uses it as force o heavy use of parataxis – opposed to hypostaxis sentence structure para – flat sentences, not using grammar to create logical relationships – Hemingway – seems democratic appropriate for a child hypo – has peaks & valleys, logical relationships recreate way child would tell this Huckleberry Finn o Just makes lists – ‘sentences’ start with “And” Pg.845 o Reasons adults take advantage of children is b/c they don’t have lawyers Mother taught her not to take that o Goes to get money back from theater manager o Mad – set candy counter on fire o If you say something you should mean it Gangsters are more honest & you taught us to look down on them Pg.846 o Devastated Hunca Bubba isn’t really going to marry her o Navigator – tells people where to go o ‘Peaches’ – tries to get off the hook with affection o never identified her as individual with integrity before o doesn’t want to answer her question b/c he doesn’t want to admit that he didn’t mean it o adults can be more than 1 person Hunca Bubba said those things & this is Jefferson o Adults take advantage of kids’ trust – parents take advantage – don’t trust them
