Black Lit 2 – James Alan McPherson “Problems of Art” pg.887  Problems of art = how you represent what it is you’re trying to say o How do you represent something to prove you’re right? o You can misuse what’s at your dispense  Black woman with alcohol problem but wants to get out of a ticket  Each character represents woman in different way b/c each has different philosophy to get her off  White attorney – surprised that she was actually drunk in end  All rhetoric distorts & is deception  Pg.887 o Carliss Milford – Mrs. Farragot’s white lawyer o Neatness in apartment – representation  Pg.888 o Assuming appearances are accurate indication that she would never get drunk o Appearances misrepresent o Form of representation – portrait – 2 dimensional, segment  Jesus – no physical description in Bible, fantasy depiction  Most paintings have no volume  People think TV is reliable – confuse deception for reality o White attorney has authority – Black woman attorney would not o Facts are random – mind tries to make sense of it  Pg.889 o Doesn’t see her as an alcoholic – her picture o Sees photo of 2 small children – maybe her children, maybe not herd o 3 picture – man in army uniform o only looking for what he wants to see, not looking for counter evidence  pg.890 o back to picture of Jesus – calculated to sell image, designed to make money o art is artificial but the only wat to talk about what’s real o this picture of Jesus omits all bad from life  pg.891 – Big Boy o if they don’t hear a version of English they place high value on, they won’t believe what you say  pg.892 – tickets  pg.894 o why she chose him – white male attorney has more authority she does Part 2  pg.895 o white English = more precise  doesn’t mean the attorney will win o talking around a point is sometimes a good strategy  protect the judge’s feelings o styles of representation  pg.897 – forms of representation o picture of Jesus o picture of Sweet Willie o Clarence’s verbal version o Officer Smothers version – verbal o Mrs. Farragot’s version o Recording of hearing  Pg.898-899 o Farragot – poor, innocent victim o Milford is wrong about why he won’t but celebrates o She did drive under influence – but representative slayed the court  Tone & spin are everything – everyone uses rhetoric
