territory of ISIS These areas of Iraq are where no one lives in Iraq Boots on the ground US is planning and helping Iraq government to do air strikes on ISIS Obama administration is criticized that Obama withdrew troops too early US policy of Afghanistan People don t want to be known as the they pulled out too quickly Obama said he we keep 90000 troops in Afghanistan and stay past 2016 Iraq and Afghanistan are similar in troop pullout nature of problem is different Afghanistan security forces are very dependent on US troops than much more than in Iraqi police force Afghanistan can t do a lot without US assistance Afghanistan is the world s poorest country in the world Afghan government is very dependenet on US government and outside aid If troops come home and security will come home Presence on the ground will help us look over border at Iran Troop announcement and if troop count is 0 in 2016 is this the current issue now At one point 100000 troops in each country Middle East is in ames Middle East has a security problem Other World Issues Russian separatist in Crimea There are all interconnected Future of Defense policy FP Needs of today tomorrow and yesterday 34 years of challenges of Middle East 30 years from today cold and still probably dealing with Middle East Middle East had a shifting US policy focus AsiaPacific will probably move to be more of the realbalance of power along with the US Military should only be a small part of it and should be important China is taking over islands from a US perspective and Chinese military is becoming very technologic advanced Taiwan issues with China Afghanistan is not part of the Middle East it is part of Asia Any military ships or planes we need 10 years from Our planes and ships are out to date Understand Defense budget and the security environment Sequestration has to happen and with budget cuts 2016 Budget is currently going through Congress Why is defense spending can t be touched Defense money doesn t buy as much Driving costs up in defense is because Retirement benefits social security Medicare Department of Defense doesn t get to say where the money goes to CONGRESS DOES Have a little to do with killing others 50 of Budget goes to Defense Budget 10 goes to Defense Congress decides on the Veteran Affairs Problem of how we are spending the money Special forces contributes useful military tool without large visual groups on the group with efficiency She believes that we need more of these types of forces 57 aircraft costs up to 61 million US conventional war is important and should be all the special forces F 35 special fighter planes are all top of line super expensive planes and are with the procurement program US has 76 of these F 35 planes Not investing in tomorrow How to prepare and spend money and the budget Iran interest are different than the US relations Bring Iran to a new level Surrounding countries have been more scared of Iran than Saddam Iran had nuclear bombs Class on 41 Iran Nuclear and Missile Technology and North Korea NK NK always wants to do something on unimportant US Holidays cute NK Iran and Iraq used to have missiles and nukes Roguestates What is this This word became popular in the 90s but was officially stopped being used in 2000 by the state department Rogue state stat that supports terrorism attempting to get a hold of weapons of mass destruction Rogue states NK Iran People think this is trying to come up with a new economy US only came up this concept we don t have an embassy or talk to them or have any type of trade with these countries Iran Iraq war fought each other to keep a balance Europe opposed the idea of Rogue states French vocabulary doesn t even have a world to describe it in their state Dealing with these states after 911 Massive destruction is out of the question after 119 Several military interventions in 98 with Iraqi during Clinton 98 World Cup Clinton broadcasted a message to Iran during the Iran vs US soccer game Clinton almost went to NK during Presidency to normalize relations In India we make a good nuclear program and agreement NK and Iran we just want to be friends and they could have their nukes if they want we just need to not be enemies Rogue states can push US to reach brinkpoint and then pull back Saddam would do this often Bush appealed to International community that they shouldn t let Saddam push the US and its allies around and also freak the US out a lot its mean What message does this send to the world Iraq war was all about nuclear weapons for sure Kaddafi gave up his nuclear program NK and Iran still playing game and creating tension NK captures journalist to get US president to visit Clinton went there after he was done with his presidency China stabilizes NK but still doesn t like but doesn t want their refugees NKKim Jung Il leader and shows power Iran is educated and supreme leader but also has president unlike NK Borders Iraq played a role with Iraq war Has oil NK doesn t have an economic base besides counterfeit money and statues of dictators You have to follow through with threats Iraq and Iran don t always follow through threats Taking out Saddam and taking over Iraq strengthened Iran Iran is very close to nuclear weapons state this makes Iran a nuclear weapon state NK for sure already has nuclear weapons If you want a state to ve up something it is very hard they have to admit defeat You have to give dictators something to save their reputation and face Deterrence preventing someone from doing something they want to do VS Compliance getting a stat to do something they originally did not want to do For Iranians backing down is really important to them ABM treaties missiles defense is could incentivize people to get weapons Having lots of bombs to overwhelm the other countries missiles Israel shouldn t worry about Iran bombing them or a direct attack If Iran became dominant power in region it would overtake Israel and increase Sharia Law Could force Israelis to leave and businesses would leave if they felt threatened Israel thought about bombing Iran itself NK is very close to SK s Seoul In 90s sanctions were important but unless its vital for their country or relates to the thing that US wants Kroenig argument We need to attack now but its going to cost a lot and we hope they won t respond or do anything the Iranians are rationale enough Kahl Rally around the ag Iran could retaliate with not using bombs but would do something with oil We would only bomb their weapons house How much is enough Did we get it all These question come to mind about Kahl s argument Some in Congress say that we need more sanctions Obama is annoyed by Congress weird Agreement to compromise with Kerry Economic to make this deal now OR could be a kickthecan kind of deal Iraq is a mess
