Chapter 19 Population Density the number of individuals of a species per unit of area or volume Another sampling technique is the markrecapture method where animals are trapped marked and then recaptured after a period of time Population Age Structure The age structure of a population is the proportion of individuals in different age groups Helps us understand the history of populations survival or reproductive success and how it relates to environmental factors Also helps make predictions Population Growth Models Two models the exponential growth model and the logistic growth model will help us understand population growth Carrying Capacity the number of individuals in a population that the environment can just maintain with no net increase or decrease Human Population Growth is based on the same parameters that affect other populations birth rates and death rates We can control human population growth with voluntary contraception and governmentsponsored family planning Technology has increased Earth s carrying capacity but no population can continue to grow indefinitely Growth births deaths
