The changing face of religion By Sarah Patterson The Pew Research group released data last week concerning religion and public life that although surveys and reports have previously indicated that religion is basis of our nation there has been a major decline across the board in religious af liation within the country Christianity divided into many sects and af liations has been the dominate religion throughout the United States existence Date has indicated that over 28 of adults that were raised in a religion have left their religion or will in the future There is also an increasing number of surveyed adults that claim to religious affiliation this previous year 161 having no affiliation Although this data indicates there is a move away from religion and affiliation with a church many church leaders still claim their practice is going strong and no visible movement can be seen Reverend Jeremy R Eckstrom Pastor of the First Baptist Congregational Church in Sandy Utah made this statement regarding the ndings quotquotWe think people are as religious now or more religious We have lots of people in our congregation who have told me they nd more comfort in the teachings of the Lord and they are attending services more oftenquot Wile Eckstrom and other church leadersmay be certain there is nothing to worry about congregation members may feel differently joshue Peterson a student at Westminster College was interviewed last week and asked if he is still an active member in the LDS faith quotquotNo I mean I haven t made any official kind of announcement or anything that I m leaving the Church and my family is very religious and so as far as they re concerned I m still a member but they think I m just kind of lazy about going but the truth is l have stopped believing My faith is lost I m just not comfortable calling myself a Mormonquot These reports indicate that there is a disparity between church leaders and their congregation Research and popular vote points towards a move away from faith and religion but church officials and leaders do not admit or maybe even see this move away Another change that religion is facing is an ever increasing move towards liberalism Many religious organizations do not support things like same sex marriage yet a large majority of religious young adults have began to embrace it Again there is a disparity between what church leaders say with comments from pastors it is against God s law and they will not change the doctrine to church members saying it is unfair to discriminate based on sexuality and that everyone should be welcomed in the church This gap in thinking is positively correlated to a gap in the age of the congregation May young adults are moving away from religion with the Pew Research nding Americans ages 1829 oneinfour say they are not currently affiliated with any particular religion So not only are the young adults within their religions more liberal but there are fewer millennial s associated with religion Overall the recent research on religion has shocked many yet still a large majority indicate through surveys that their feelings are well represented in the research A major disconnect has been discovered and the answer to why is still unknown
