Kathryn Coolidge UNIV 2600 Short Essay: Disciplines  Two disciplines that are relevant to my major would be psychology and music.  Psychology can be defined as the scientific study of the human mind and its functions. It  focuses on the behaviors of living things and what causes them to act that way. Questions that psychology poses are what went on in the brain that caused a person to act a certain  way, what types of things can cause abnormal psychology, and what can be done to fix it. Music can be defined in many different ways. As a major, music is defined as the study  of vocal or instrumental sounds combined in such a way as to produce beauty of form,  harmony, and expression of emotion. The central focus of this discipline is analyzing and  performing music. Questions that music poses are what are the elements that make up a  piece of music, how can we interpret that, and how can we perform it.  Psychology is a softpure social science while music is a softapplied humanity.  Both areas are soft, meaning they are interpretative and valueladen. However,  psychology provides more of an understanding of the subject, while music is more about  learning techniques to put to use. Also, psychology is a social science because it explores  human mind, while music is in the humanities category because it’s an experience that  we try to understand.
