What is Geography Geography is the study of land features inhabitants and phenomena on Earth 2 Conceptual Applications Physical and Human Physical Geography are things that you can touch Ex Rocks water and landforms Human Geography are the opposite of physical This type of geography focuses on things like religion languages politics and economics Another example is culture which is the belief and customs of a particular group of people of a particular place in time Studying Geography When studying geography with a maps the map must have a title north arrow scale bar and a legend Another way to study geography is with remote Sensing which is gaining information about an object or phenomenon without making physical contact with it Ex Satelite radar and sonar One last way is a Geographical Information Systems which studies different types of relationships Scale is a representation of a real world phenomenon of a certain level of reduction or generalization The basic spatial unit for the world is the geographic realms The 12 Realms are 1Europe 2 Russia 3 North America 4 Middle America 5 South America 6 North AfricaSouthwest Asia 7 SubSaharan Africa 8 South Asia 9 East Asia 10 Southeast Asia 11 Austral Realm 12 Paci c Realm With the geographic realms there are 3 criterias 1 Physical and human application 2 Funtional purpose 3 Historical identity There are two Realm Varieties The Monocentric and the Polycentric Realm Regions is an area relative uniformity 5 criteria of a Region 1 Area 2 Boundaries 3 Location a absolute and b relative 4 Homogeneity similarity 5 System
