POL S 1 042114 Plato39s Apology Socrates39s Death is Tragic o A tragedy involves usually two parties pursuing incompatible goods I Both parties are trying to do the right thing o Wisest man is killed o Democracy has to kill Socrates Opening Critique of Democracy o Beings his defense by criticizing democracy 0 1 Their speeches were so compelling but not a word was true I Contrast with Pericles best arguments will rise to the top I Socrates says no most successful speech is the most compelling not the true speech o 2 Forgive me for how I speak I39ve never come to your democratic institutions before I minded my own business I Socrates doesn39t care about democracy only truth I Says democracy is corrupting the youth Defense Against the Old Accusers o Aristophanes I Aristophanes play 20 years before the trial is not an accurate representation of Socrates Socrates think the play is why many people are upset with him I It shows him running a school Socrates says he was doing something else entirely Socrates thinks he39s doing the work of the gods Doesn39t understand the oracle and tries to find out why he39s the wisest man through 1 Politicians o Only reveal their own ignorance o The youth when they follow Socrates they39re getting closer to the truth away from traditional institutions 2 Poets o Socrates says they don39t know what they39re talking about 3 Craftsmen Laborers Businessmen 0 They know their skill 0 But because they know their skill they only stress their skill Socrates realizes his ignorance he39s the only person seriously asking questions 0 To revel the ignorance of others 0 In the process has turned the youth against traditional institutions The New Accusers The lury Votes POL S 1 042314 Apology and Crito New Accusers o Corrupting the Youth Socrates is the teacher of corruption he39s getting paid to do this He39s knowingly teaching the youth of unjust speech But he39s a teacher but he doesn39t get paid just tries to pursue truth He claims he doesn39t know anything Not a teacher in a traditional sort of way He39s not intentionally corrupting the youth no one intentionally corrupts the youth Says democracy is what39s messing up people Horse trainer analogy Raise a horse for a purpose You don39t go to your community to raise your horse you find someone who39s an expert how to raise your horse you defer to your expertise If you39re raising a child why would it be any different o Education based on expertise not on democracy 0 Worshipping False gods and Being an Atheist He39s not doing both but he39s charged with both so he39s not guilty But not a good legal defense because both of these are not acceptable in Athens Socrates makes the claim that he39s doing the work of Apollo Questioning the god is being an atheist or worshipping other gods The Verdict and Sentencing 0 Doesn39t make any legal claims to make his defense 0 Iury has 2 separate votes On the Crito 1 Guilty or Not Guilty Found guilty 2 Penalty death or nothing Prosecution wants him dead Or vote that Plato will pay for him and he39ll keep doing the work of Apollo More people vote death than they voted him guilty Democracy if it39s going to survive has to kill Socrates Socrates pursues only truth Athens picks democracy over philosophy picks ignorance over truth 0 Socrates potential jail break 0 Ordinarily in Athens business is handled in one day I But for Socrates it was in the middle of a purity ritual so no one is executed during this I So Socrates is in his jail cell for a number of days o Crito bribes the guards and tries to let him escape I He finds Socrates sleeping Crito is surprised because he seemed so peaceful and calm Promise of philosophy doesn39t give you a good night39s sleep but in this case it39s not true POL S 1 042514 Crito Crito s Arguments o Socrates should break out of jail I 1 Consider the reputation of his friends Socrates doesn39t think this makes sense Socrates doesn39t care about what others think about him only truth 2 No need to worry about the risks Socrates doesn39t care about the consequences 3 Money is no object Socrates friends are willing to spend money to save him 4 There are good places to go There are places that welcome him 5 Socrates would commit an injustice by complying with an unjust law Crito asks if you have a law but that law is unjust should you have to comply with that law 0 Crito is relatively simple minded Making the law itself a character 0 Law presents better arguments than what Crito makes 3 reasons that law make 0 1 Breaking any law does damage to the concept of law I If you can pick and choose what laws you can follow it39s going to do damage to the idea of having laws 0 2 The law is like your parents I The law is what made it possible for you to be who you are today I Law set up the educational institutions structure of communities I But the law put Socrates to death so he doesn39t feel the need to comply o 3 Tacit Consent I Socrates has tacitly consented to do whatever the law told him to do I Haven39t objected up to this point so you should keep doing it I But there39s never a point in your life where the law comes up to you and ask for your consent I 6 Breaking his duties to his family Socrates has a wife and kids but he39s the worst husband and father 0 He disregards them because truth is more important to him than family relations I 7 Coward if he doesn39t leave Socrates is facing death for what he believes in so this argument is disregarded The Arguments of the Law o Exoteric argument on the surface for lazy readers I Intended for people who are lazy to dig deeper o Esoteric secret or hidden argument I Don39t undermine the law itself if you39re going to talk 0 Philosophy practiced around Crito Strepsiades who are not philosophically sophisticated it might have a corrupting effect Why Does Socrates Stay Kill Socrates
