CHEMISTRY 1 5 o NQTES FEB What is Matter 0 In terms of our class Molecules 0 And each of those Molecules are made of Atoms 0 When there is only one type of Atom present it is an Element 0 The number of Protons denoted by 2 an Atom contains defines which Element it is Wh l is Chemistry 0 The study of Matter 0 Elements do not change in chemical reactions but their Bonds do 0 Molecules are specific Elements Bonded in unique ways 0 These Bonds are just Electrons being shared between the Atoms that make up the Molecule Isotopes 0 Every Element has one or more Isotopes 0 Their Protons are the same but there Neutrons differ o This is results in different Atomic Masses 0 Chemical Reactions between different Isotopes are the same but their physical properties are different Periodic Table 0 Elements can be arranged in two ways 0 Columns known as Groups or Families I Elements in Columns tend to have similar properties 0 Rows known as Periods 0 Further broken in Blocks based on which orbital is filled Periodic Trends 0 Elements get heavier as you move down the table 0 Elements on the right side of the table are easier to give Electrons but hard to oxidize 0 Elements on the left side of the table are easier to take electrons from and easy to oxidize A trick I learned to remember this Cesium which is on the bottom left of the table is Santa Clause because it gives away Electrons so easily and is a large Atom On the other side think of Fluorine as Scrooge because it takes almost any Electron and is a small Atom 11111101131 Sections 0 First oldmn Alkali Metals Second DDHMWDWZ Alkaline Earth Metals 0 Both metals that react violently in water 0 Last Solemn Noble Gases 0 Very unreactive 0 Second to last CQDHMWUWZ Halogens o Nonmetals that are pretty reactive 0 Middle section Transition Metals 0 Holds a variety of metals with different oxidation 0 Rare Earth Metals Lanthanides and Actinides 0 Almost always in 3 oxidation state
