ENGR 312 Dr David Rogers Im pact of Technology on Societyquot 1st week of class 082415 to 082815 Hello guys I have been selected to be a notetaker for this class by StudySoup Iwill be posting notes weekly for this class In addition Iwill be posting study guides for every exam at least 4 days before the exams If you have any questions you can shoot me an email Iwil try to do my best to get as much information as I can from the classes and share them with you I hope we have a successful semester and good luck 082515 This day we had an introduction to the class the syllabus and a study guide can be found on blackboard Prof Rogers has good information on blackboard that you can download and review for the class The exams will have questions about the material on blackboard but new questions will come from the new material cover in class Videos slides speakers etc First topic Nature and Technology Nation on the Move Narrator Yul Kwon This video is about the systems and networks in United states specifically transportation how people live their everyday life moving around though the transportation systems like subways airports trains and roadways Kwon showed through the video how the systems help the people to move around but also how the development and growth of the population is putting in risk the functionality of these systems Transportation systems were built about fifty years ago for a certain amount of population and estimating that it will last and accommodate future generations The problem is that population in United State is growing faster than the transportation systems can handle America Revealed USA has 4 million miles of roads 200000 miles of rail 5000 airports New York City is an example of a powerful but old system of transportation that still can handle and move their people around the city Island of manhatan 23 sm with 16 milliion people In the 3 major airports located in New York there is an estimate that one flight comes and leaves every 24 seconds estimating 3500 flights per pay landing in new york 5000 taxis vehicles transport people around the island of Manhattan Also more than 100000 people are traveling to and from the island by boat ferries transport at least 65000 commuters a day This island also handle wth rail transportation system transporting people into the island every 2 minutes trains from New Jersey Long Island and Amtrak arrived in one of the busiest hub in the US Pennsylvania Station In Addition just a few blocks away you have to add the Northern train station The Grand Central Terminal After all the people is into Manhattan then the problem is to move around the city thousand of taxis trucks and cars made it the one of the most traffic cities in the world The word Gridlock was originated in the city How all the people can get to their places on time with all the traffic and the answer is the subway 5 million passengers use the system everyday first track was laid in the early 19th beneath manhattan multiple subway lines connect there to multiple suburbans like Queens Subway construction in 1970s was the beginning of the development of Queens city 100 years ago the crowded city of manhattan had to expand its surrounding and it was the moment when they constructed the subway systems out of the city they called them the tracks to nowhere People living outside of manhattan had a good experience having a short ride to their works but in 1920s the systems was already crowded adding 100 more miles then the depression on World War II stop construction These days the systems has not been updated since the 1930s but It still can handle to transport people Transportation in US is really important and even though old systems has not been updated they still transport people all over America 082715 School Bus Transport more than 26 million of americans everyday making it the biggest form of public transport in the US In Arizona in small communities the school bus is the best form of transportation for students to get to school 160 miles a day in average for a bus driver using a satellite device found that a bus driver moves 15 million miles every year Railroad is the first public transport that connected the country from coast to coast Railroads helped to build the modern US in which we live Chicago is the heart of the railroad system All national rail lines end in Chicago there are three different system coming to chicago commuter trains amtrak trains and the most dominant trains the freights Us has the most efficient and profitable system of freights more than 10 times the ones in Europe most of these freights come to the Chicago freight yards to be organizedThe double hump was built by shipping companies to process and rearrange all the freights to send them to destination The word used for classifying the cars is called humping passenger travels are the most affceted by the freights due most of the rail lines are used to move goods and materials Air Travel is the newer and faster transport system created in US this system connect to every corner of US more people are taken to the skies every year Chicago O hare International Airport handle flights coming and leaving every 34 seconds which is around 1 million flights a year Baggage apartment in airplanes are used to transport any type of goods for long distances this includes from human remains Florida ships around 50 death bodies everyday which is a retirement place for the people Also prisoners and aliens are transport on Air Airports are one of the most busiest public transports in the world Airplane transportation has developed in the past years even though in Montana there is a old system that is still on duty In the 1920s commercial air travels have a problem to guide pilots during the night to their destinations The soultion was to tell farmers to create bonfires in the files creating a path to follow for the pilots to reach their destinations later they replaced the bonfires for 1500 Gas beacons Later on the 1960s modern radars were replacing the gas beacons with the exception of montana were the peaks of the rockies block the radar signals So pilots still uses the beacons on Montana to guide their flights but skies are getting busier and we will need a better idea to control the flight traffic 0 Federal aviation administration FAA helps to control and guide the flights in all america leading them until they get to 10000 feet elevation any type of Air transport listen to the national flight plan to follow instructions and keep the order on Air traffic The problem of the system is that is control by radar and these systems need air traffic controllers to keep the order on the skies which means that less airplanes can take into the skies Using the system to maximum capacity right now the FAA will need a better system for the future to handle the traffic 0 Looking for another remote city Alska uses a lot of air transport systems due thatjust 13 of the state is accessible by road However 13 of the community airplane crashes of US happened in Alaska In alaska as in Montana mountains block radar signals but in Alaska pilots use a newer GPS radar system which can reach every corner in zone Air Alaska is the first commuter planes that incorporate a system called Nextgen which is a GPS radar incorporated into the plane that helps to navigate Pilots said that one of the advantages is that they can now navigate in a direct route before they had to follow radar to radar to reach destination making zigzag and taking longer flight routes using GPS system they can create a complete route making the flight faster and more efficient However the cost for Nextgen is high as much as 160 billion dollars but it could handle to flight more people for the next years 0 Most american prefer cars transportation Dallas is one of the places where people like to take their cars to go from place to place People from the department of transportation are in charged of collect the data to know how much traffic they have to handle and take decisions about where to build a new road or wide an existing one or create maneuvers in the roads 0 Highways were constructed years ago to move people from city to city but during the years these road have created a development in the community creating more and more new communities around the highways the problem is that as the population keep growing up the road systems can not keep to the same rate Also major road are built to transport people from the suburbs to the city but many people nowadays stay in the suburbs increasing the traffic in the small road Next class will continue the Video
