82815 Class Notes Chavin Art Consists of a lot of humananimal like composites Ex Lanzon Great Lance Ukhu the force that is covered over Lanzon Made our of granite and relates to agricultural fertility It is 15 feet high and is located inside the Old Temple The Lanzon refers to the Amazonian foot plow The entire structure was built around the Lanzon which was originally housed in its own square building but then was incorporated in the larger temple Lanzon features Round eyes Feline fangs Flat nose Snarling mouth Claws talons as nails Chavin Stylistic characteristics Metaphoric substitution Repetition of motifs Symmetry Double profile Looking at the Lanz n attened out it is exactly symmetrical except for the hands One of the hands right hand is upwards towards the sky and the left hand is down ON EXAM 6 basic features of the Lanzon Style What does it represent Is it a deity Is it supernatural Describe its animallike features The Lanzon was considered an Axis Mundi meaning the center of the universe for Chavin culture Sunken Circular Court Located in front of the old temple Contains panels cement blocks of humananimal like figures Looks like a jaguar s body but with the talons of an eagle On top of the jaguars exist panels that look like a person standing up with features of Iaguar tails Feline fangs Snakes for hair Eagle talons Tenon Heads These are located on the exterior walls of the old and new temples Majority of them aren t on the walls anymore but only one is still on the wall These also have a bunch of different features which once again include humananimal like features Black and White Portal The name came from the stone across the top of the doorway because it is made out of white granite The black limestone is on the north side of it Stonework of the new temple Mythical hybrids Avian anthropomorphic beings on the two columns of the entrance One of the hybrids is an eagle that looks to be a woman and the other hybrid is a hawk that looks to be a man Raimondi Stela This is the new temple that was built as an expansion It is the second deity from the site
