it no more ambiguity at all the child abuse pedophilia sexless Eli etc aren t in it Let the Right One In myth of vampire teenager sexual ambiguity of youth ambiguous desire t s popular nowadays used to be vampires were evil and ugly myth of vampire has had been adapted so much monster romance spoofs is according to one reviewer the Best Vampire Movie Ever movie shows obvious signs that people are vampires blood must be invited can become vampire after being bitten sexless this film was adapted by the novel Let the Right One In The author of book adapted the book to the movie much more things happened in the novel Eli s protector becomes a protagonist after his fall in the book he becomes a vampire and survives the fall I6 17 Tuesday May 6 2014 Movie revolves around relationship bt Oskar a bullied child and Eli a young girl who has a protector with whom she has an unethical relationship with In the book the man is an outright pedophile yet Eli controls the relationship and does not let him touch her Eli is a castrated young boy Theme Sweden in snow isolation alcoholism at the brink with Soviet Russia on their doorstep Set in a few decades ago as marked by the Rubix cube Everyone is an outcast and abusing themselves Oskar pitiful so pale looks like he has a lot of snot coming from his nose unheathy he looks fairly vampiric himself Clip opening sequence we see half screen filled with falling snow we hear sound bridge of Oskar saying Squeal like a pig cut to Oskar in the reflection of the window in his room We see his reflection which shows that he isn t a vampire but looks like a ghost We see him with his shirt off showing how skinny and pale white he is The movie doesn t explain him saying squeal like a pig was a result of his candy gorging that s why bullies picked on him However the film doesn t explain it bc it doesn t matter The bullies themselves are neglected and abused They seem to not be taken care of Back to clip Arrival of Eli and her protector Hakan Eli is humming The color red is introduced by a red dot of a light on the car s dashboard red is a motif back to clip we see Oskar put his hand on the window then take it off and see the mark fade away Oskar notices the car that Eli arrives in We see him pick up a knife the knife motif comes from the beginning Oskar is clearly portrayed as a budding sociopsychopath Oskar and Eli s relationship shared fears shared survival shared isolation abandonment Sado masochistic relationship When Oskar takes Eli s previous protector s place the cycle of dependency and abuse begins over again other motifs snow impaired vision through windows glass skewed POV Oskar lying down languishly The camera pries into his own privacy almost predator like 18 Tuesday May 6 2014 Blood of first man trickling down highly detailed Red color sweaters whoever wears red will be attacked red parts of decor Oskar s plastic toy when going to visit his father often strange unmotivated view points of the camera Every time we see a conversation unbalanced composition heads cut off by the frame other person s body in the way the composition sometimes shows how something wrong is going on ie when Hakan is discovered and tips the acid onto his face we see Hakan on the left side and the discovered kid on the right side w a big black partition in the middle Hakan has done hideous things but he is wiling to do the ultimate sacrifice by pouring acid on himself when discovered he is obviously conflicted Notion of gender identity formation how does a teenager form an identity doesn t matter to Eli she is a forever entity Oskar offering his own blood Eli transforms very quickly into a monster she s on all fours she looks vulnerability at times is vulnerable and very dangerous dangerous when she is most weak from bloodlust the group of four people the 3 men and Virginia Stand for everything that is wrong with the town cat shut in abusive and alcoholic Lacke etc Landmarks around the town show that the town isn t all that big lots of racking focus changing the focus from foreground to back ground etc Often used around Eli she s suspended in the world When Oskar tests Eli on her coming in she takes a shower she become hygenic Then we see Eli s castrated privates it s so quick we don t see and don t want to see Such backstory is made unclear but it is not important she survived but she is pitiful and won t change High angle on Lacke coming in to kill Eli Oskar makes his choice and saves Eli Scene with the pool sound patternframing pattern everything is restricted to Oskar s perception we only hear what Oskar would be hearing Payoff of the red motif Oskar has made his decision he leaves on the train and does the secret knock that means kiss in morse code This is the kid s game their relationship Oskar now the new caretaker Tuesday May 6 2014 Hope they will make it bc the world in which these serial killers are is worse that what they are We want them to get away despite the fact they will continue the same killing pattern Doesn t have anything to do with blood substitutes will be murder continuity functional mistakes Many jumps in the story gaps that doesn t explain some backstory disunity Most movies we go to see at the theaters are genre movies outdated genres Westerns musicals melodramas coming back sentimental over the top feelings genres cinematic formulas that have endured fill a particular needs types of stories codified by the kinds of charactersdrama that appear in them films add to the visual aspect Advertising can use tropes of genre to sell predictable nostalgic symbolic values Charles Altman Puritanical attitude towards entertainment Thomas Schatz language analogy semiotics the grammar of the film language model fields of reference particular settings values ideology cultural context Genres of Order settings are specific western gangster Genres of Integration 19 Tuesday May 6 2014 doesn t matter where it takes place integration of the people who otherwise wouldn t be together ie musicals Singing in the Rain need revelation for characters to come together Horror Why is it so popular Documentary The American Nightmare 20 Directed by Adam Simon shots of different gruesome corpses horror films creepy circumstances violence real violence against youth or blacks war in Vietnam call about getting nuclear weapons shots of soldier justifying the dead bodies by saying it s protection against communism continued clips and voices showing and speaking horrible things keep saying you ve got to get the President on the phone cut to different horror movie workers George Romero John Carpenter and Tom Savini and David Gronenberg and Wes Craven they were introduced and are filmmakers about horror stories We see them tell their stories throughout the documentary Tobe Hooper says he shot this stuff then 20 yrs later found out what it really meant Tom Gunning talks about how cinema becomes a ghost images of people long dead First was received as immortality then ultimately it just delivers ghosts a representation of the past Not someone who lives forever but whose shadow has been caught and forced to repeat the same gestures over and over again condemned to repetitive Another director Tom Savini talks about how he made models of monsters another man described how he d change the channels watch a horror movie until it got too scary and change channels again as a kid In Frankenstein children would write letters saying they re sorry for the monster amp that s what the director wanted Even though Frankenstein was a killer made up of dead bodies Kids who got enthusiastic about frankenstein old zombie films etc Zombies blue collar kind of monster was us only dead On director remembers how the night of the living dead starred a black guy and how he was so impressed However critics tore night of the living dead a apart but film directors loved it they said it was a great film Tuesday May 6 2014 How the threat doesn t seem like a threat then suddenly it is first one to have a reality and gritty feel to it Why is it worse to be killed and eaten than just killed goes back to primal infantile fears idea of family values as a young girl zombie kills fathermother also an analogy for lynchingsfreedom marchescivil rights struggle idea from horror movies come from very real social dynamics in the real world can have devastating consequences that isn t actually real but addresses real life scenariosconsequences when night of the living dead was about to be released they heard the Martin Luther King had died then shattered faith on what was going on such as when Kennedy was shot too Entire nation was repeatedly traumatized and lots of conspiracy theories of those kinds of assassinations and events Vietnam everyone or almost everyone was affected by the war and its horrific consequences the makeup artist Tom Savini recounts his time in Vietnam He remembers how he was scared the whole after coming from a time when he would make people scared in his work He was always practicing his makeup effect over there but when he saw gore in Vietnam they had to turn off their emotions he says he used the idea of a camera looking at the gore through a camera and the gore was special effect was able to look at bonebloodgeography Seeing what he d have to do to recreate the scene If it s going to be horrible it s going to be horrible the way he saw it but not in real life fear every writerdirector brings some experience of hisher day into the scriptmovie Think what kind of films do we watch today what do we watch in your spare time how does that reflect on what s going on in our society Thursday May 8 2014 Lecture 17 Documentaries The Fog of War Eleven Lessons from the Life of Robert S
