A new world Lecture The First Americans were descendants of the Japanese They had advanced cities specifically buildings cities roads and agriculture Religion The Native Americans practiced in Animism which was the belief that non human things and animals possess spiritual essence Land and Property The Natives believed in the concept of land for all They shared land within themselves and had no sense of proprietorship Gender Relations Europeans thought that Native American women were being raped because they had pre marital seX with whoever they chose and if they decided to marry they could divorce freely Indian Freedom This was essentially the motto of the Native American people They believed in Do what you want when you want European Freedom On the other hand the Europeans believed that everyone had the liberty to do what they wanted to do They had to live with the rules the bible set upon the mass population to determine whether or not they were good and destined to go to heaven or hell Expansion of Europe Europe was able to make most of its voyages mainly because of the invention of the compass and the Chinese Junk Portugal and Western Africa Portugal s reason for going to Africa was because of its greed for gold and for slaves This ultimately begins the unforgettable age of slavery The Spanish Empire Mostly used the bible and Christianity to justify the enslavement of Native Americans Because of the horrible treatment the Natives were going through an important minister named Las Casas wrote to the Spanish King and demands to free the Natives since he believed they were people Therefore Native enslavement was outlawed Ironically enough He didn t think the African Slaves were people The French and Dutch France s goal for coming to America was not to make an empire or to settle like the English but to essentially find the gold everyone was talking about and find a way to leave what is now Canada because the settlers that came to Canada were France 5 undesirables 0 The Dutch Empire came to the Americas because of their interest in setting up new trading ports since that was how they became rich in Europe Plus their forte was not bringing up successful colonies 0 One of the colonies the Dutch set up was New Netherlands which later on becomes New York People are interested to go the New Netherlands because of Religious Tolerance which is different from religious freedom Religious tolerance means that you do not have to follow the church or believe in God as long as it was not known publicly I will upload the rest of the lecture notes I take from my class next Friday
