Sports Management Class Notes September 13 Week 2 What is a racist Define race a color society defines biologically distinct from other populations believed in by society and continually used to put people into an imaginary box Racial Ideology beliefs around color social construct common racial stereotypes in sports associated with race What we talked about Racial Stereotypes a black man can run faster or jump higher Mexicans are good at soccer Dominicans and Cubans are good at baseball White men usually do sports such as nascar motocross and swimming Impact of the Stereotypes opportunity all depends on how hard you work for it opportunity also depends on where you come from and the amount of money that you have we How do we classify what certain races are capable of 39 Some people base this off of opportunity how much money people have and where they grew up 39 Society tells you what you can and cannot do 39 If you succeed at something society tells you that you are not supposed to it becomes odd for society to witness and be okay with Activity Discussion Why is race not a thing Why is it not biological 0 it s easy to point out skin color rather than distinct features 39 work at something to get good at it 39 Kids have certain role models 0 Racial ability segregatior opportunity society tells people what they should do or who to be 39 Believe that they have to do what society wants them to do 39 Do things well and believe that you will be successful 39 Be an outstanding athlete in sports For Thursdays class we watched a video about the Redskins and some Youtube videos that peers had turned in for the media assignment last week The videos that had the biggest impact were the ones that had Key and Peele One where they do the west coast and east coast conference with the footballs players and then another one where they were sports casters Now the video with the sportscasting talked about how one of the anchors gave adjectives for football players of color that only described their ability on the field and the football players that were white had adjective that described their intelligence And as we had discussed in Class when football was first letting men of color play they were not thought to have much intelligence and were not allowed to play as the quarter back They also were not allowed to be the coach of a football team or even interviewed for the position This video had the biggest impact on the class and after watching we discussed that we as a society today are immune to the way certain players are depicted however when it is brought to the forefront only then do we realize that it s not okay to do those certain things
