Immunology September 1St Immune response can be both good and bad It distinguishes self vs non self Distinguishes normal self vs sick self Remembers what it has seen It is controllable meaning it can switch itself off when not needed It deals with challenges at cellular tissue and molecular target If the immune system doesn t work immune deficient disease happens Allergy and hypersensitivity is a reaction of it attacking itself Cancer is an example of it failing to distinguish itself sick In ammation is caused when the immune system fails to turn off when it is notneeded Example of self and non self recognition sperm amp egg maternal and fetal interaction and innate natural immune response September 3rd Small pox was one of the major killer disease until a vaccine was found to cure it The vaccine contains strands of cowpox which caused immunity against the disease for humans The immune system works by the help a transmitter and receptor this helps it communicate with antigens and start the fight against the pathogen Vaccines have an attenuated strain of the bacteria that causes the disease attenuated means that it is a weakened strain The strain is weakened to the point that it can t affect the human however it has enough potency to cause immunization Examples of deleterious immune response 1 Allergy amp hypersensitivity 2 organ and tissue rejected during transplant 3 loss of tolerance auto immunity 4 immune stimulation of tumor growth 5 immunodeficiency disease Examples of anatomical barriers is the skin and mucous membranes Examples of chemical and physical barriers is the body temperature pH amp enzymes Example of cellular barriers non specific host defense are leucocytes amp neutrophils monocytes dendritic cells and natural killer cells
