Psyc Exam 3 Ch 11 Notes Stress & Health 22416 Health Psyc ● stress appraisal influences experienced stress look at it as either a threat or a challenge Stress & Health ● Selye’s model of stress… ○ general adaptation syndrome (GAS) ○ 3 ways of responding: ■ Alarm dilated pupil, increase in heart rate, energizes, more oxygen ■ resistance weakened immune system, sleep troubles ■ exhaustion physical response, increase in cardiovascular disorders, cold or flu ○ psychoneuroimmunology: study of relationships among psychological & biological responsiveness to stress *** ○ hormones are released in stressful situations (cortisol) ■ can be useful: i. elevate blood pressure & boost oxygen & nutrients to each pt of the body ● HOWEVER… 1. they also interfere with the ability of nerve cells to store energy. social stress may cause death of some neurons 2. high ranking baboons experience more social stress than more moderately ranking ones. high ranking = higher mortalit(Sapolsky’s work) ● Internal/external factors of stress: ○ in text, look at the research on positive impact of positive emotions, confessions, & on letting grievances go ○ optimism positive impact on health, as does a sense of control ○ preliminary research on breast cancer: those with “fighting attitude” 2 times more likely to be alive 10 years later ● Influences on stress: ○ Personality Type A & B ○ Type A driven, time conscious ○ Type B Relatively relaxed ○ Another personality trait associated with stress emotional inhibition ■ deny anger, anxiety to self & others, heart & blood rate increase ○ Environmental influences “life events scale” ● Coping strategies: ○ problem focused coping ○ emotion focused coping Stress Reduction ● contact comfort ● exercise ● relaxation/meditation ● looking outward empathy & helping others associated with higher levels of happiness ● social support (pgs. 405407) Positive Psyc ● subjective well being perceived happiness/satisfaction with life ● happiness relative, genetically influenced, money only increases happiness at low incomes & diminishes at income rises
