The Kennedy Family HONR 199-3 Notes Taken February 29 th Patrick Kennedy  Came to the United States during the Potato Famine even though he was reasonably comfortable  He thought there was greater opportunities in the United States.  Patrick meets his future wife Bridget on the trip over, and they arrive at Boston Bridget Murphy  Married to Patrick Kennedy  Has four children. Her husband soon dies after her fourth child is born.  Bridget gets a job selling items for clothing and eventually becomes the owner of the business.  This was the first Kennedy business in the United States (stated in 1850’s) Patrick Joseph Kennedy  Only son of Bridget and Patrick Kennedy  His first business was a bar  With the money he made from his bar, Patrick becomes a purchaser of real-estate  Then, Patrick becomes a member of the State Senate  Married to Mary Hickey Joseph Patrick Kennedy  Mary didn’t want to name her son Patrick Joseph Kennedy Jr. because of anti-Irish precedent in the U.S.  Aspired to be the first Irish president of the United States, but did not have the political skills  Marries Rose Fitzgerald (whose father did have political skills) Joseph Patrick Kennedy Jr.  First born son  Enrolled in navy – assigned to Europe  In order to become a war hero like his brother, Joseph volunteers for another tour in the army. He accepts the assignment to piolet a plane loaded with TNT and aim the plane at a German rocket base directed towards London. The plane explodes, killing Joseph and his co-piolet. John F. Kennedy  Second oldest brother  Enlists in the navy and sent to the Pacific Ocean. He becomes a war hero. Kathleen Kennedy  Marries William Cavendish  Her parents were mad at her because her family was Roman Catholic and William was a protestant. William was killed in combat shortly after their marriage.  Kathleen then wanted to marry Lord Peter Fitzwilliam  Both of them die in a plane crash on their way to Europe. Rosemary Kennedy  Might want to look at youtube video called Rosemary: The Hidden Kennedy Daughter  She had a learning disability  Her father (Joseph Kennedy) authorized brain surgery on Rosemary but did not tell his wife  Rosemary’s condition became worse after this  She was eventually institutionalized  Eunice Kennedy visited her a lot and stated the Special Olympics
