Ontology (of cinema) – the study of being - Metaphysics – the study of reality through concepts - The study of particular kinds of beings - We need to look for the distinctive qualities that make x cinema Qualities of Cinema – detached display = spatial dis-continuity =between viewer and the screen. La Jetee. Chris Marker. 1962 - Has the impact of cinema but is more like a slideshow. - Has story sequence. A slideshow w/ commentator, sound, and voice. - A film with low frame rate, flows like a natural story – has movement. - Different projection speeds possible. o La Jetee uses an unusual frame rate. - Standard frame rate produces movement that created a sense of continuity which La Jetee lacks… meaning gaps? - This discontinuity is incompatible w/ cinema. Criterion #2 - Must have movement or create the impression of movement. - Cinema fee to experiment/play with movement.
