Chapter 5 – Enzymes, Coenzymes, Energy Living Organisms Need Enzymes Because:  They need nutrients that provide energy for… growth, reproduction, repair, movement,  etc  For Biochemical Reactions:  o the breakdown, formation and rearrangement of molecules to get rid of energy  and provide building blocks or organisms *take a long time The rate of a biochemical reaction can be induced by:  Temperature increase  Catalyst: a substance that increases the rate of a chemical reaction How does an Enzyme Speed Chemical Reaction? Substrates/ Reactants: the substance on which an enzyme acts Products: the outcome of a reaction *every enzyme has specific size and shape that belong with a certain substrate  *every enzyme contains a binding an active site. Cofactor – Enzyme Helper Cofactor: assistants in biochemical transformation Nucleotides and Minerals  Coenzyme: a substance that enhances the action of an enzyme. Functions as Cofactor Vitamins: they are used when creating enzymes  Factors That Affect Enzyme Action  Turnover #: number of substrate molecules that an enzyme can react to in a given time  Influences of turnover #: 1. Temperature  2. PH 3. Enzyme – substrate concentration Biochemical Pathways: Catabolism: set of metabolic pathways that breaks down molecules into smaller units. Anabolism: set of metabolic pathway that construct molecules from smaller units.
