Feminist IR Theory 2.29.16 Marxism & Feminist IR theory are critical, which means they critically analyze dominant theories. Feminist IR theory looks at IR from a gendered perspective. Values feminine attributes like compassion, empathy, compromise, forgiveness, etc in international relations. The world is focused on war between countries because it comes from a masculine perspective. Feminist IR theorists care about different issues like poverty, war rape, domestic abuse, female circumcision, honor killings, etc. **Issues that haven’t been central in discussions regarding IR and politics. **this takes a gendered perspective and reinforces it, perpetuating gender in critical theory. Benefits: encourages consideration of people who are often invisibilized in international relations but also impacted by it. These are the people who are feminized. It forces us to confront impacts of policies on people who may not have a voice in making them. These are people like women, children, the elderly, and the disabled. If a country doesn’t conform, the rest of the world puts economic sanctions on it, which directly affect women/feminized people the most. Problems: this theory tends to praise femininity & criticize masculinity w/o considering negative implications of former or positive implications of the latter. Grudges = feminine, decisiveness = masculine.
