Friedan Huey Long NSC 68 Upton Sinclair Duck and Cover Liberalism PART II Two of the questions listed below will appear on the midterm you will choose ONE 1 of them to answer Your essays should have a thesisargument that you are making in response to the question I strongly recommend that in preparing for the exam you think about how you would answer each question and prepare outline answers and a possible thesis for each one This preparation will make writing your answer in the actual exam a lot easier In thinking about the questions you should also consider how you can link your answers to the readings we39ve examined so far this quarter as well as what we ve covered in class In order to score an quotAquot on this section your essay must refer to some ofthe sources we39ve looked at This section of the exam is worth 50 points 1 9 Explain the development of liberalism as a political idea in American politics from the 1930s to the 1950s Why did liberalism become popular and how did it change Be sure to define what you mean by liberalism in your answer Discuss the development of the role ofthe federal government in American society between the early 1930s and the 1950s Be sure to address the factorsforces that drove changes in the role of government in your answers Discuss how and why the status of EITHER women OR African Americans changed in the United States between the experienced by the US between the 1930s and 1950s Explain the causes and consequences ofthese changes How did the international role ofthe US change from the 1930s to the 1950s Why did these changes occur Ideological differences between the Soviet Union and the United States were the predominant cause of the Cold Warquot Do you agree or disagree with this statement in whole or in part Explain your answer Read the questions carefully Good essays will answer ALL parts ofthe question Successful answers will make references to relevant primary and secondary sources we have examined so far this quarter Exam Tips The biggest mistake that students make in taking exams apart from being unprepared is not allocating their time ef ciently in the exam You have 60 minutes to complete the midtermmake sure you use your time wisely Each part of the exam is worth 50 points so you should only plan on spending 30 minutes on each section Don t spend more time on any section than it is worth in terms of percentage of your exam grade eg the identi cation terms in Part I are worth atotal of 50 points of your exam grade so you should only spend 30 minutes on this section approximately 56 minutes on each term Make sure you read the exam instructions carefullyif you are required to answer 5 out of 7 identi cation terms in Part I make sure you complete 5 answers in this section It can be really useful to outline your essay before you begin writing itthis can help you get your thoughts in order and remember what you had planned to write about
