African American Studies 40A class notes 11509 Lynching is one of the major push factors of the great migration Natural disaster was also a push factor because there were animals that ruined crops therefore there was no need for labor Harlem Renaissance was the cultural excitement and rebirth a new hope for freedom and equality Jobs in the North were better paid than in the south but still blacks and whites were not paid equally fir the same job Chicago defender rst issue 1905 was sold through individual agents Outsold every newspaper in the country Lynching was on the cover of every black newspaper other papers didn t report it If a black person was on the white news negro was put next to their names so in the black newspapers they put white in revenge South s economy suffered because people were going north so they tried to stop circulation of Black newspaper so that they would stop migrating The newspaper gave hope and pride 11 1009 Garvey was in uenced by Washington He was popular among Blacks and Whites Thought blacks needed different ways places to live He never went to Africa Made people feel important because they could get away from white supremacy he wanted to create a nation where blacks could do what whites did in US and be selfsufficient and leaders Laws of segregation made it too difficult for blacks to live peacefully so it was appealing for blacks not to have to feel be humiliated by whites To accept segregation is to accept inferiority AntiChristian Reverse racism Garvey is very attering to white people because he said things like whites are the natural leaders of the world Garvey said Dubois was lazy Garvey wanted to purify black blood if they were mixed with white PanAfrican ideology that creates a coherent group of AfAm people all over the not equal in public schools No date was set for when desegregation had to happen so it was slow Just because the law changed doesn t mean that people ideas would change People were still racist despite change in segregation laws Eyes on the prize Fighting Back Whites said desegregation was against the bible They had riots because a black girl was accepted into U of Alabama She was suspended so that the riots would stop Whites knew that with violence they would keep Blacks out of their schools President Eisenhower said desegregation shouldn t happen too fast in order to keep people calm Little Rock a moderate city buses integrated schools desegregated slowly 9 Blacks were to attend central high school but on the first day state troops were there to keep them out Daisy Bates was the students strongest supporter Eventually the 9 entered through the side of the building Soldiers had to walk them from class to class to avoid whites harming them One of the black girls was kicked out because she retaliated to a white persons rude comment by putting chili on a boys head All little rock high schools were shut down for a whole year in order to prevent chaos Governor would rather no one get an education than to integrate blacks and whites 4 black lSt graders were sent to a white school and that caused a riot They said blacks were pushing too far too fast States wanted to protect their white way of life There were lunch counter sitin protests There were jailins where they wanted to be arrested so that they can make jails overcrowded and then the authorities wouldn t know what to do with so many people Blacks sat in white churches and white people freaked out James Meredith was the first African American to be admitted to the University of Mississippi aka Ole Miss 120109 available Money spent on war was critical of US imperialism March on Washington was seen as official end of racism in 1963 They saw it as nothing else had to be done after this to stop racism However this moment was only symbolic it didn t really change anything for racism People were still racist even though the laws had changed Pg 328 but this isn t end of this story there were church bombings in Alabama Blacks were blamed for not overcoming Pg 330 ihistorical review bus boycotts white families who supported blacks went to go pick up their black workers since they could not take buses to work Social security they don t get it so it s a form of institutional racism Pg 327 taking a disjuncture between contemporary legacy People appear to not be racist but in reality they are racist separate Black world re ects black disillusionment Why are riots happening Blacks tired of of being treated as 2quotd class citizens so they wanted to revolt Whites took it as a riot They just wanted to get attention Media coverage of riots was exaggerated Ghetto area of extreme poverty Suburbs surrounding areas of the ghetto Underclasslower than the lower class Portions of the Black Americans that lived in overwhelming poverty They were a permanent underclass because of the intergenerational persistence of this economic and social situation White ight Blacks move in so whites move out discussions 110409 Great migration and harlem renaissance by William Dudley arguably the most signi cant trend in AfricanAmericans life in the early 20Lh century was migration As late as 1900 faced new problems 225 The causes ofmigration continued social repression in the south limited opportunities of agricultural work natural disasters like oods and animal infestations created economic woes The move north economic opportunities created by WWl curtailment of foreign immigration most black men wanted as unskilled industrial laborers while women took jobs as domestic workers only few were skilled workers most migrants lived in crowded segregated communites According to William Dudley these areas marked by poverty and crime were known as ghettoes and slums Important to know these areas also became centers of vibrant AfAm culture Impact of WW1 Black support for war was strong and civil rights supporters believed democracy abroad have a positive effect for possibility for democracy at home Blacks soldiers who returned from Europe found racial antagonism in urban areas with growing black populations Soldiers fought in segregated units 1920 witnessed rise of harlem renaissance AfAm literary intellectual artistic movement Rise of Black nationalist movement led by Marcus Garvey Failed campaign by NAACP to make lynching federal crime Growth of KKK Depression impacts electoral vote Most shift from republican party loyalty to democratic Most AfAm support for FDR and new deal Garvey Blacks must promote racial pride and purity Jamaican led UNIA supported Black nationalism or economical self sufficiency Believed white majoring would always deny power for African Americans and proposed back to Africa movement Black races have their right Generally encouraged uplift of Black people of the world intemationalism scope did not encourage racial mixing Believed whites would never stand for the ascendancy of blacks Critical of black elected officials belief that they were self serving rather than seeking will of Black community made past with KKK to get blacks out of US AntiGarvey garvey narcissistic selfserving argued Garvey s policies were British not American phenomenon
