MATH1113 7 Precalculus Fall 2011 Instructor John Doyle Office 427C Boyd Call Number 447523 Phone 54272641 Time 905 7 955 MWF E mail jdoyle mathugaedu Room Life Sciences C130 Office Hours 1000 7 1100 MF 330 7 430 Tu or by app ointment Course Objectives Students should learn the background material necessary for them to successfully continue with a scienti c calculus course Students should learn algebraic exponential logarithmic and trigonometric functions and their graphs Students should also be able to solve simple maximum and minimum prob ems Textbook SwokowskiCole Precalculus Functions and Graphs University of Georgia Edition 12th Ed Cengage Learning It is highly recommended that you purchase a new shrinkwrapped copy because it contains an access code for you to access WebAssign WebAssign A majority of assignments homework web quizzes and tests will be done online through WebAssign see Links below Due dates for homework and web quizzes will typically be the day before the test For this reason I will not offer extensions on these assignments Homework The best way to learn mathematics is to do mathematics Required homework assignments are found online on WebAssign WebAssign homework is essential practice for learning the material as well as preparing for web quizzes and tests 1 also highly recommend working additional problems from the textbook 1n the nal grade 1 will drop your three lowest homework grades so I will not accept late homework assignments InClass Quizzes 1 will give roughly ten inclass quizzes throughout the semester These quizzes will typically be announced during the lecture before the quiz though I reserve the right to give pop quizzes 1n the nal grade 1 will drop your two lowest inclass quiz grades so 1 will not offer makeup quizzes Calculators will be allowed on some but not all inclass quizzes See the Technology section below for more details about calculators Web Quizzes There are eleven web quizzes on WebAssign 1n the nal grade 1 will drop your three lowest web quiz grades so 1 will not offer makeup web quizzes Tests Final Exam Tests will be administered on WebAssign in Boyd GSRC rooms 220 and 324 outside of class time Students must register for a test time on the MATH1113 website see Links below Students are required to present a photo ID at test time Makeup tests will only be allowed in the case of unavoidable absences and I must have written documentation in order to grant a makeup test If your nal exam grade is higher than your lowest test grade then the nal exam grade will replace that lowest test grade The nal exam is comprehensive and will also be administered on WebAssign in Boyd The test dates are the following Test 1 Sept 677 Test 2 Sept 21722 W7Th Test 3 Oct 12713 W7Th Test 4 Oct 317Nov 1 M7Tu Test 5 Nov 17718 Th7F Final Exam Dec 879 12714
